Christmassy Accessories: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Are those life-size earring figurines of Frosty The Snowman a good idea?
Dressing for the holidays is just as much fun as preparing for the holidays any other way, but there are definitely some fashion faux pas out there just waiting for a woman to say, “Oh how cute!” Now… if that’s your thing, then by all means, grab those light up Christmas tree hair ties, red and green plastic bracelets, and go do that voodoo that you do so well. But on the other hand, if you want to show that you’re in the Christmas spirit, without making your holiday ensemble seem look like something you’d see hanging on a tree, or in a neighbour’s yard, then grab a shopping list, a pen, and pay attention.
First up; Christmas tree earrings, with different coloured rhinestones for ornaments: Two Thumbs Down. If you have to, do Christmas tree earrings, try silver or gold, small and dangly, with not so many different colours. Silver will be cheaper than gold, and is more elegant as well.
Second; Christmas pins! Oh, the horror! There are hundreds of horrible, gaudy, tacky, garish designs out there. From the enormous gold Santa, sleigh, and reindeer pin, large pins that spell out JOY, with snowman heads for the O, and green and red letters. And then there’s pins that don’t even have anything to do with Christmas, but happen to have red and green in them. For example, the holiday coffee mug pin, or the cowboy boot with a sprig of holly where the spur should be. Put all of those awful things back in the little shoe box of horrors, and return it to the top shelf of your closet where it belongs.
If you have to have a Santa pin, try a gold or silver silhouette of Santa. Reindeer pins can be just as tacky if you aren’t careful, so try to find a polished silver, or rhinestone reindeer, to place on your lapel, or your Christmas dress. Instead of gaudy JOY, coffee mug, or cowboy boot pins, try silver or gold holly pins, lacy silver snowflakes, or silver bells.
Third; green and red rhinestone costume jewelry bracelets, or bangles aren’t as popular as they were in the 80’s, ladies. It’s time to wake up, and explore the fashions of this decade. Surprisingly, charms are much more charming on a bracelet, than they are on your neck, or lapel. A silver or gold charm bracelet, with dangling Christmas related charms is cute, fun, and not as garish as it might have been before. However, don’t get anything with plastic, or that has a bunch of multi-coloured rhinestones. Remember, we want to be elegant. If it’s an issue of wearing someone’s Christmas gift, then I’m afraid you might be stuck. There’s only so much you can do, aside from… “accidentally” losing it. Unless it’s a gift from one of your children; then you’re really stuck.
