Bara Imambara
Take one of many available Lucknow flights, settle in, and head on down to Bara Imambara. Established during a famine around 1794, Bara Imambara was intended to bring gainful employment to hungry residents of the area. Today, the stunning monument can be entered for 25 ₹, where a guide takes visitors through a maze of passageways, the can’t-miss Asafi Mosque, and the Shahi Baoli, a structure surrounding a well that is cloaked in mythology.
-
The Residency
These historically protected ruins once served a refuge for the British during the uprising in the mid-1800s. It is said to contain thousands of graves of fallen British soldiers. One of the most important monuments of the colonial period, it also offers a museum and an observatory. Take a look around, and you will even see signs of damage preserved since the revolt, including numerous bullet holes and marks from cannonballs.
-
Hazratganj

Chandrika Devi Temple
Along the banks of the Gomti River, you’ll find one of the region’s most beloved temples. Erected in worship of Maa Chandrika, it is said that the founder of Lucknow’s son was approached by Goddess under the light of the moon after praying. The temple is now more than 300 years old and was once barely visited, as it used to be surrounded by very dense forest. Today, visitors love the accompanying bazaar and ample space to explore, as it is not known to be too terribly crowded. The exception may be religious holidays, where people travel to the temple from all over for meetings and ceremonial activities.
These five destinations are just the beginning. From markets and museums to nightlife and a zoological garden, Lucknow is a well-established cultural center brimming with activities for everyone. Start planning your first visit today, and you’ll find plenty of reasons to return.
