Spread the love

If you love wine and are interested in learning more about its rich history and culture, a trip to a winery can provide you with fascinating insights. Most wineries love to welcome visitors and are happy to allow you to sample their wines as well as describe the entire production process, from grapevine to bottle.

It’s always advisable to book before you go. Choose a day and time that aren’t too busy – this way, you can be sure there’ll be someone on hand to greet you and give you a guided tour.

Another tip – dress for comfort. You may be standing and walking for long periods, sometimes on hard and uneven surfaces, so leave the high heels in the car, and switch to your favorite trainers. Also, the interior of the winery will likely be cooler than the temperature outside, so take along a sweater or jacket in case you feel the chill.

Keep in mind that your guides at the winery understand that you are not an expert, and they’ll love to share their knowledge and help you enjoy the wines you’re tasting. So never be afraid to ask questions.

Here are a few questions to start your exploration of the amazing world of wine.

  1. What’s the history of this winery?

The answer to this and related questions will probably be answered during your, but you shouldn’t be afraid to go deeper.  When did wine production start in this region? Who was the founder, and who is the owner now? You may be surprised. Wine-making is traditionally thought of as a male preserve, but the participation of women in wine production has often been overlooked.

  1. Which grape varieties are grown at this vineyard?

The flavor and aroma of any wine depend not only on the climate and soil in which the grapes are grown but also on the variety of grapes. Many types, originally grown in Europe, have been successfully exported all over the world, creating countless ‘New World’ wines, which are often perfectly adapted to the contemporary drinker’s palate and go perfectly with modern food. Chances are you’ll be taken to see the vines to gain a greater understanding of how the grapes grown, ripen and are harvested.

  1. What’s the difference between red and white wine?

This depends on the color of the grapes used and the production process.  Red wine tends to be fuller-bodied and is drunk at room temperature, while white wine is served chilled and is more often described as ‘crisp’ and refreshing. White wines can be dry or sweet.

  1. How are your wines fermented?

Again, this will most likely be explained as you tour the cellars, and see the equipment, whether traditional or ultra-modern, which is used in the wine-making process, from start to finish.

  1. What makes a ‘great year’ for wines?

It’s understood that some years are good for wines, some not so good, and occasionally the wine produced in a certain year will be pronounced as ‘vintage’.  Understanding the factors involved will help you predict which years have produced the best wine and select the best wines in the future.

  1. Do you blend your wines?

Excellent wine can be produced by blending grapes of different varieties. It can be fascinating to understand not only if this is done in the winery you’re visiting, but what is achieved by this process.

  1. What information should I look for on the label?

These days, not every wine comes in a traditional bottle – there are many attractive contemporary designs. But, understanding what you should be able to learn from the label can help you discern the quality of any wine you may purchase in the future.

  1. We’re going to taste several wines – how do I do this and stay sober?

This is something many first-time winery visitors are shy about asking. The answer is that you’re only going to take a small sip of each wine.

Observing the color, smelling it to sense the bouquet, and holding it in your mouth so you can fully appreciate the flavors, are the order of the day.

If you’re invited to spit it out after savoring it, don’t be shy!  Just rinse your mouth so that your palette is clean for the next sample.  In many cases, you’ll also be provided with some small snacks as a complement to the wine you’re tasting.

  1. What food would you pair this wine with?

Let’s assume that after tasting a few different wines, you’ve found one that appeals to you more than the others.  You may decide to buy some just to enjoy for its own sake, but it’s also useful to get some idea of how you could pair it with foods to enhance your enjoyment of both. Your guide should be able to come up with some suggestions- going far beyond general  ‘white wine with fish, red wine with beef’ ideas.

  1. How do you recommend serving this wine?

What is meant by ‘room temperature’? Doesn’t that depend on the temperature of the room you’re in? And what about ‘chilled’? Is that a just few degrees warmer than ice cubes? Can being too cold impair the flavor of the wine?  Should it be decanted, and if so, why?

  1. How should I store this wine at home?

Wine is generally stored horizontally, in a cool place.  Consider whether you’ll be able to do this. Or, maybe this won’t be an issue as you’ll be drinking it soon after it arrives at your home!

  1. I’ve made my choice. How do I buy?

When you’ve found a wine you love, it’s time to take the plunge and buy- whether it’s a couple of bottles or a few cases.

Taking your purchases home with you can be the sign of a successful trip, but it’s also worth asking about the options available for future deliveries.

And, if you think you might like to offer some as a gift to friends or family – do they provide special gift wrapping and shipping?
