It is placed in between the plate and wrappers to hold the electrolyte in its place. Also, this battery creates a physical connection by way of capillary action. Gel Batteries –  This battery is also sealed, just like AGM. But that is their only similarity. Gel Batteries uses silica sand to transform sulfuric acid into a gel structure. The gel also requires a lot of care because it develops pockets; it will quickly rust the plate. Pockets usually form when the gel by exposing it to high amperage situations. 

Maintenance – Gel batteries are not for fast charging/discharging situations. Always make sure to avoid using it in high amperage situations as well. This type of battery is more robust than a flooded battery when it comes to the internal structure but weaker than AGM batteries when it comes to strength.
