Can CBD oil make you sick?

CBD oil affects everyone differently. It’s unlikely that taking CBD oil will make you sick but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Therefore we need to look at how it potentially could make you sick.

Can CBD oil make you sick?

This means looking at all of the potential side effects of taking CBD oil. From here, we can determine if they can make you sick or not.

While CBD oil is now legal at the federal level, there have not been many studies since its legalization that show it is bad for your health.

So with all this in mind, let’s now do a little deeper and see if any of the side effects of CBD oil can make you sick.

Does CBD Oil Make You Sick?

Nothing about CBD should make you sick. It is completely safe for human consumption. However, what could make you sick are the mixers it comes with.

For example, if you have an allergy to the mixer, it isn’t going to agree with your body. A common dietary allergy relates to nuts so it’s important that you read all of the ingredients carefully before taking any CBD oil.

A lot of CBD products contain coconut oil because it makes CBD more bioavailable. In other words, the nutrients found within coconut oil help the body metabolize and use the CBD better.

Now, it goes without saying that if you are allergic to coconut oil, there is a chance that you could become unwell from taking CBD oil. But again, this would not be due to the CBD oil itself – it’s the coconut oil that is causing the symptoms.

Dr Michele Ross, CEO of Infused Health, had this to say on the matter:

“CBD oil is used with many carriers, including olive oil, coconut/MCT oil, grapeseed oil, emu oil, or hempseed oil. If you are experiencing gastrointestinal distress symptoms or an upset stomach, you may have a sensitivity, especially to coconut/MCT oil, which is the most common carrier I’ve seen. Many people can experience abdominal cramping and stomach pain, especially when consuming large quantities.”

Dietary Restrictions

Following on from the above, let’s look at how CBD oil can affect you if you have any dietary restrictions. For example, you may have started to adopt a vegan diet or have stopped eating foods containing gluten.

Changes to your diet can have an effect on how CBD reacts with your body.

People that take CBD with an empty stomach can feel sick. However, this can be easily remedied by taking CBD oil with a meal.

In fact, taking Vitagenne CBD oil on a full stomach can improve the rate of absorption. CBD (and cannabinoids in general) are fat soluble so if you really want to feel the effects quicker, take the CBD with healthy fats.

CBD Oil With Medication

For anyone that uses medication on a regular basis, it’s important that you consult your doctor before taking CBD oil. This is because you must understand if it will react with the medication and interfere with your treatment. After all, the last thing you need is to make your condition worse.

For example, there is evidence to suggest that the intake of CBD increases the production of serotonin hormone. For reference, serotonin is responsible for helping to regulate mood and social behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory, and sexual desire and function.

Therefore, if you are suffering from mental illnesses like depression or anxiety and taking serotonin medication, taking CBD can cause Serotonin Syndrome – and some of the symptoms include nausea.

This is just one example but the principles remain the same for any condition you have – always seek professional advice before taking CBD oil if you are on prescribed medication.

Other Common CBD Side Effects

Most people don’t experience side effects from taking CBD oil. However, people that are taking CBD for the first time might experience mild side effects. They may also start to feel some side effects if they start to increase the dosage.

Depending on your tolerance, you may feel the effects after only one or two drops. Note that there has been no evidence to date that suggests large doses have a negative impact either. If you plan on using CBD oil for the first time, start with one drop a day.

If you don’t feel anything, increase the dosage little by little until you start experiencing the effects; the most common being feeling ache and pain relief over your entire body.

CBD oil can also cause drowsiness. While CBD triggers the release of serotonin, it also triggers the hormone melatonin. This neurochemical is known as the ‘ultimate sleep aid by’ other health supplements. The claim is that just a small, single dose of melatonin can cause you to fall asleep in just a matter of minutes.

CBD can also cause you to lose your appetite. There was a study published in 2012 that found rats who were exposed to CBD experienced reduced appetite. And sometimes a loss in appetite can lead to feelings of nausea and sickness.

Finally, while there is not so much of a risk of becoming addicted to CBD, there is the possibility of developing a tolerance to it. There is also a chance of withdrawals if you stop taking CBD. Signs of withdrawals include becoming more irritable, restless sleep and insomnia or nausea.

However, with all this in mind, let’s remember what we mentioned at the beginning of this article: CBD affects everyone differently so you may not experience any of these side effects.

Conclusion

For anyone with an allergy to any of the mixers that come as part of CBD oil supplements, it can make you feel sick. The same goes for people that are taking prescribed medication or have made a recent change to their diet. Most of the time though, CBD can increase your quality of life. Just make sure to check all the ingredients before taking CBD oil. If you are still unsure, visit your doctor.
