Party Sized Tempura – The Perfect Starter Recipe
The perfect way to begin a Japanese themed Party is with easy crowd-pleasing Tempura fritters. Use a myriad of vegetables to please all palates.
Ingredients
(Assorted meat, seafood or vegetables according to taste)
2 bell peppers (2 inch wide wedges)
1 large sweet or red potato (1 inch slices)
2 medium carrots (strings)
4-6 mushrooms (whole)
1 small squash (1 inch slices)
6 broccoli (bite-size pieces)
6 French beans
6-8 large prawns
6-8 scallops
1 large onion (rings)
4-6 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
Tempura Batter
1 cup + 3-4 tablespoons tempura flour (a light, low-gluten flour available in markets)
1 cup ice cold water
Tempura Dipping Sauce
1 cup tsuyu
1 tablespoon mirin
Optional: chopped green onion
Procedure
Sprinkle all of the main ingredients with 3-4 tablespoons tempura flour.
In a medium to large pot, fill with vegetable oil until the ¾ level and heat over medium high heat.
In a small bowl, mix the remaining tempura flour with ice cold water.
Coat the ingredients with batter by dipping it in the bowl and then placing into the hot oil.
Fry for approximately 1 minute and remove from oil before it browns.
Place on rack or paper to drain excess oil.
In a small bowl, mix tsuyu and mirin with green onion for tempura dip.
Serve hot and enjoy!
