Throwing a summer party for kids
The summer holidays can be a sudden change for kids. They’re used to seeing their friends five days a week at school – sometimes switching to the holidays can leave them isolated. Throwing a summer party is a great way to remedy this by having all their friends round and enjoying the sun! Here are some tips for hosting a summer party for kids.
Set up in the garden
Keeping the majority of the party outside will come in handy. This’ll help the kids get fresh air and also minimise the fear of any accidental damage of your house! Invest in some outdoor toys to help encourage cooperation and imagination in their games.
Decorate in accordance with a theme
It’s no secret that kids love to dress up and mimic their favourite characters, so build on this with a theme for the party! You can host a costume competition, create snacks and drinks that match and decorate with various accessories. Balloons can be one neat way of creating a theme, while colour coordination and special invites can also help achieve this.
Create a sun-free area
Ensure everyone has a safe area outside to get away from the sun to minimise risk of sun stroke or exhaustion. Make sure you’ve got extra sunscreen on standby in case anyone runs out and keep cooled water nearby. A sun-free area is also a great place to set up any food (or ice creams) so it can be kept safe from those summer insects. Also be sure to check that everyone’s wearing the appropriate clothing to protect themselves from the sun.
Have a mixture of activities and freedom
Try to create a balance of freedom of playing and structured activities/games so that the party flows well, but the kids don’t feel like they’re back on a schedule. Come up with games that match the theme together with your child before the party so you can be sure it’s something they’ll want to do! But remember allowing them this time of freedom is important too. Unstructured play is even better if you can connect it to nature. Playing amongst nature can is said to boost creativity, mood, improve attention spans and improve wellbeing.
Overall, a well-timed party can be brilliant for kids. With the right supervision and an array of activities you can keep them stimulated across the summer.
