What’s in Your Backyard? Common herbs that could be growing right under your nose!
The next time you are out mowing your lawn or playing with your kids in the backyard, look around at the greenery that surrounds you a little more closely. Many people have herbs growing right in their own backyard that they don’t even know about!
The type of herb will depend on the climate you live in but for every climate there’s an herb that will thrive in it so the chances are good that what you’ve been paying money for at the supermarket you could have simply gone out and picked! Below are some of the most common herbs that are found in people’s backyards.
Mint
The most common herb that is likely to grow in people’s gardens is mint. This is because mint will do well in just about any climate, with just a little bit of damp soil. Mint often goes overlooked because it looks like any other weed.
If you find any mint in your garden, you do need to be careful as to how much mint is in the garden. The only problem with mint is that it grows way too fast and multiplies extremely quickly as well. Because of this, it can take over a garden and choke out other plants.
If you have an abundance of mint, start pulling it out and freshening all of your favorite foods and teas with a hint of mint!

Wild Marjoram
Wild marjoram is also very popular in backyards. This is often mistaken for wild flowers because it bears flowers that are slightly pink in color. Wild marjoram is sometimes also called “mountain mint”. Wild marjoram cannot only be dried and used to cook with but it can also be used as an oil and even as a mouthwash!
Be sure to look for this beautiful herb next time you’re out in your yard because its uses are countless!
Parsley
Another extremely common herb that could be growing in your backyard is parsley. Parsley is perhaps the most common herb that is used and because of that, it may not have gone overlooked. Most people can recognize parsley quite quickly and so it’s not too much of a surprise when they see a small parsley patch flourishing in their space.
Basil
Basil is another herb that may be growing right outside your own home and you may not even know it. This is mainly because basil is another herb that grows very easily and doesn’t need much tending to.
Paprika
One of the most surprising herbs that may be growing in your yard is paprika. This herb originates in North America and although just about every variety of paprika that you will buy in the supermarket will taste much the same, paprika that is grown in your yard will have its own unique taste. This is because paprika’s taste is dependent on the soil that it is grown in and the taste will be different for the herb that has been grown in different soils.
