Decorating with Tile – Ideas Beyond Bathrooms
Adding tile invigorates interior and exterior spaces, creating beautiful accents that will impress visiting friends and help you learn to love your home again. We have all seen every kids of wall art brought to life in bathrooms. Today, we bring you ideas for improving your home design and decorating with tile in other areas of your house.
Decorating with Tile on Walls
Most people think of tile for kitchens and bathrooms, but there are many other places inside and outside of your home that can be beautified by using tile, including fireplaces, walkways, walls, fountains and swimming pools. The talented folks at Natalie Blake Studios invented a clever ‘Tile Backing’ to mount decorative tiles on walls shown above.
Try matching tile and grout
A different way to decorate with tile would be a look of grout that doesn’t stand out. If the grout contrasts with the tile, all people will see is separate squares or boxes. Choosing a grout that blends in with the tile, on the other hand, will result in a more even or contiguous look.
Let art tiles be unique
If you choose art tile, you have to be prepared to let it be art. This means getting out of the mindset that says that all tiles in a pattern must be uniform and identical. Art tiles are designed to be unique, and you should embrace this. Each unique piece of tile comes to form this feature bedroom wall designed by Contour Interior Design.
Choose inspiring colors
Color is a very psychologically powerful thing. If you design a room with tiles, choose colors that stimulate your brain. This way, you’ll wake up every morning, go into your kitchen or bathroom, and be inspired and delighted by what you see. The Beach House featured above, uses blue to extend the ocean into the house.
Decorating with Tile in Kitchens
Here’s a great tip for redesigning your kitchen with minimal effort: paint your kitchen cabinets a new color and then create a new backsplash out of beautiful tiles. You’re kitchen will look brand new. The Kitchen Studio designed this kitchen with Cherry wood cabinets and used two different tiles to create an eye-catching niche within the usual tiled back-splash. www.cutmyplastic.co.uk recommends the use of plastic kitchen splashbacks, which are often cheaper and much easier to maintain and clean.

Another wonderful idea for adding a pop into your regular tiled floor are the ‘Carpet Tiles’ by Flor.
Tile Murals for Exterior Walls
The facade of your house is what gives visitors the first impression. Talented interior designs can custom design wall tile murals for interior as well as exterior walls. The Rialto House in LA is an excellent example. Designed by R&D Architects, this exterior shows how tiles can be used to create an impressive entrance.
