How Dishwashers Can Save Time and Energy

A few curious facts about dishwashers

The dishwasher is one of the most useful kitchen appliances to be invented. This wonderful machine takes away all the stress and strain of washing dishes and allows you more time to spend on more fulfilling tasks – but just how fascinating is its history?

Installing your dishwasher

The dishwasher was first invented 125 years ago and has made domestic life much easier for countless families. In order to benefit from this labour saving device you can install it yourself – the Service Force website has some great tips on how to go about this process – and use it as regularly as needed.

The invention of the dishwasher

Josephine Cochrane came up with the idea in 1887 as she was worried about clumsy hand washing practices damaging her bone china. The first mechanical dishwashers were hand operated … and operating them was hard work!

Evolution of the machines produced an early form of the fully automated model that lives in most contemporary kitchens today. Dishwashers weren’t available for public purchase until the 1950s though – previously they were only sold to commercial outlets including restaurants and hotels.

Dishwashers can save water

In these environmentally conscious times, people are concerned about saving water. An article in The Huffington Post, with facts taken from Scientific American, claims that hand washing dishes uses around 27 gallons of water whereas a dishwasher will only use 4.25 gallons of water, thus making it far more environmentally efficient.

Trust your dishwasher … 96% of dishwasher owners don’t

There’s no use in installing a labour saving device if you’re going to duplicate its function by hand. It’s believed that 96% of dishwasher owners spend time cleaning their plates before putting them into the dishwasher but you don’t have to do this.

Not only are you wasting water but you’re also wasting valuable time. Modern dishwashers and detergents are able to clean really dirty plates without pre-soaking so trust your dishwasher to do its job properly.

You don’t just have to use your dishwasher for cleaning your crockery

Cleaning dirty plates and knives and forks are the most obvious uses for a dishwasher but some people even use them to clean their flip-flops and trainers! Others use them to clean toothbrushes and food stuffs like potatoes.

For mechanics, some people find that the dishwasher is the best way to clean their exhaust filters and rid them of surplus oil. Household sponges and wipes can all collect harmful bacteria, and you can easily annihilate these by placing the cleaners in the dishwasher too as the combination of high water temperatures and an efficient detergent will soon abolish all germs.

We’re not suggesting that all of these suggestions are the best ways to clean specific items but it certainly demonstrates the versatility that we believe our modern dishwashers have!

Always unload your dishwasher before use

79% of dishwasher owners never unload their dishwashers properly. This means that some plates will be cleaned through several cycles, rather than just one. You’re wasting water and not getting the best possible use from this ingenious device if you do this so make sure you get into good habits early on.
