Disinfecting Sponges and Cleaning Cloths
Sponges and cleaning cloths are often forgotten when disinfecting the kitchen. Sponges and cloths have lots of crevices for bacteria to grow and they are usually damp for long periods of time making them an even more desirable place for germs to accumulate. These cloths are then often used to wipe up other areas of the kitchen and germs are spread. Disinfecting sponges and cloths can keep your family healthier and even make your kitchen smell better. Cloths or sponges that are used on a regular basis should be disinfected at least once every other day and right after any raw meat food preparations. Following are a few ways that you can disinfect sponges and cleaning cloths:
Cloths and sponges should be cleaned before disinfecting. So always start by rinsing them with warm water and dish soap.
Place the sponges or cloths in boiling water for at least 30 seconds.
Wash the sponge or cloth in hot water. Place it in a microwave safe bowl with a bit of water. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes. Be sure to check the cloth or sponge and make sure it is not drying out. To use this method you must also be certain that there are not metal parts in your sponge or cloth. Let it cool a few minutes before touching it.
Soak the sponge or cloth overnight in a bleach solution.
Never use a sponge longer than 3 weeks.
Wash the cloth or sponge with a load of laundry in hot water. Let sponges air dry.
Sponges can also be put in the dishwasher as long as you are using the high heat drying method.
Place the sponge or cloth in a bowl overnight with vinegar. (Doesn’t smell great, but it kills the germs).
