How to Pick the Right Signature Pieces for Each Room of the House
A big part of decorating and designing your house is balance – too many eye-catching furnishings, or not having enough to attract attention, can really make a space feel wrong, or even downright uncomfortable to be in. However, with the right signature pieces, you can easily re-arrange a room – or even your entire house – to feel much more centred and natural.
Each individual room will obviously have its own purpose, and therefore its own recommended style, but it’s perfectly fine to be a little unconventional! Mixing bathroom suites with plastic potted plants, for example, can help you fill space in a way that looks pleasant and somewhat professional, whereas decorating a bathroom with some water-themed wall fixtures and decals can take it in a much more “silly” direction. It’s entirely up to what sort of look, or theme, you’re hoping to work towards.
Floor and Tiles
Of course, it’s not just the contents of the room, but the parts of the room itself. Think about the flooring: is it wood or timber flooring? Tiles? If so, which kind – bathroom tiles, kitchen tiles, or something more standard? All of these sound like minor differences at best, but they chance not only the way a room looks, but the very purpose of its existence in the first place. A tiled living room is a rare sight, as it a fully-carpeted bathroom, so careful planning is needed to achieve a natural look if you want to keep things like that.
Walls
The walls matter, too – not just the wallpaper, but what’s on the walls themselves. Mirrors, especially the omnipresent bathroom mirror, can make or break a room simply by how they’re placed and where they reflect light. Functionality obviously takes priority, but there’s always some wiggle room to place in a slightly different place, or even on an entirely different wall. On the other hand, an ornate wallpaper is worthless if you can’t actually see it for all the wall decorations – balance is, as usual, the key to making a room feel natural and usable.
Details
Everything in a room, even down to the smallest detail, can change its look and feel dramatically. Something as minor as kitchen taps or floor tiles can cause a room to look perfectly fitting, or completely slapdash and random, which in turn can lead to people being uncomfortable trying to navigate (or even temporarily live in) your home – especially if it’s a widely-used room, such as a bedroom.
A signature piece can, in all honesty, be anything. Whether it’s fabulously decorated, or plain and low-cost, there’s always something that’ll eat up the attention of whatever room it’s in. What’s important is that you know what it is and what you can replace it with, as well as how to use this attention to make each room more appealing to both you and your guests. It doesn’t even have to be decorative.
