The Bedroom Design Ideas You Haven’t Yet Seen on HGTV
We’ve all settled into an HGTV binge before, catching endless episodes of House Hunters or Flip or Flop. Although many of these shows are inspiring and can make you want to get up and design, after a certain point, you start to notice that most of the content is the same. Everyone wants an all-white kitchen with stainless steel appliances, or everyone wants a five-piece bathroom with taupe colors and brushed metal fixtures.
It will often start to feel a lot like getting the same advice on repeat.
If you’re tired of old advice and want something new to freshen up your bedroom- here are some ideas for designing your bedroom that HGTV hasn’t captured yet!
Bright Textiles
Although the home and garden channel has a long history of using color pops and textured pillows, most shows avoid mixing the two. Fortunately for those with excellent taste, bright textiles are coming in strong this year. Bringing through the beautiful textures of Mexican embroidery, and soft fuzzy surfaces, bring so much life to a room. If you’re not sure how to start with these, look for pillows and blankets that remind you of the early nineties and work outwards.
Revamp Where Your Plugs and Switches Are
Most shows try to tell you to put outlets next to your bed, but Americans are sleeping less and less. These fewer hours means a higher chance of anxiety, depression, and heart problems. Try to ensure that your plugs are away from your bed and set a time every night when you leave your phone on the charger and get into bed.
On this same note, light switches are a change that’s needed. Instead of just having one by your door, consider installing one also by your bed. This change will let you settle into bed reading and not have to get up or be handy if you have to get up in the middle of the night. Although lamps are also fantastic to have at your bedside, a further away outlet could hinder that!
Platform Beds Are Back!
Platform beds were a big hit in the early 2000s because of the modern and sleek look they offer. They never lost their charm, and are on their way back into style. There have been some updates, like the types of legs people use on them, but as long as you like the look, that’s all that matters. Some people even install lights under the bed, so it gives off the vibe that it’s hovering, which can be a fun and modern touch.
Ensure that your bed is comfortable, not just stylish- and find a bed with mattress materials you like. This step will ensure that you’ll sleep well regardless of what your bed looks like, or how far away the plugs are.
Return of the Jewel Tones
Jewel tones are making a strong comeback, filling bedrooms with rich and highly pigmented colors that will leave anyone daydreaming of lush forests and precious stones. Large pops of color like a messily painted accent wall to add texture, or furniture in deep rich tones, can be enough to make your room look modern and inventive. If you’re not sure about a color, consider holding it against black to check its quality. White, although making a lot of colors look stark in contrast, is quick to eat away at the tone.
Don’t Be Afraid to Go Large With Art.
Gone are the days of tiny portraits and simple little pieces of art. Go far large and beautiful when it comes to creativity in your bedroom. If you can’t paint in your apartment, or you don’t want to paint in your home, using a large painting can work as an accent wall to make your room seem more significant. Only get art that you genuinely enjoy, don’t just grab something you think other people will find pretty.
Plants in the Bedroom
Plants are an incredible thing that more people should have in their rooms. If you’re new to caring for green things, or aren’t sure you have the skill to keep more than a succulent alive, it’s okay! There are some more natural plants to work with that add a striking look and fresh air to any room you want. Pothos plants, the vines that can stretch against any surface you put on, are low maintenance and beautiful as decor. They only require you to water them once a week and will give back so much in return.
Snake plants and Zz plants are also low work, and they’re stunning. The sharp edges and gorgeous color patterns make them look like living art in any bedroom.
Sound is at the Center
Think about more than just the looks and feel of your bedroom. Consider sound. Put a Bluetooth speaker somewhere to ensure you can get the most of it, and put it to use! Speakers can be used for white noise when you’re trying to sleep or may pep up your mood in the morning if you put on a getting ready playlist. Design for most of your senses, and don’t be afraid to include sound in your plans.
