How to Paint a Ceiling

Painting your ceilings can be a great way to inexpensively change the look and feel of a room. A painted ceiling can add character, depth, and richness to a room. If you are interested in painting your ceiling then all you need to do is follow these simple steps.1. Pick Your Paint The first thing that you will need to do is select a paint that you like. The paint that you select should compliment the wall color that you have, and it should have a finish that is not too shiny. If you don’t know what color to use on your ceiling then you may want to try a lighter shade of your wall’s color.2. Prepare Your Ceiling For the best results you will want a clean, flat surface to paint on. If you have a textured ceiling you may want to take the time to remove the texture and smooth on a fresh layer of plaster. If you have a smooth ceiling then all you will need to do is to wipe down the ceiling with a damp cloth, making sure that you remove cob webs and dirt. If your ceiling has paint that is chipping or peeling then you will want to sand down these areas and apply a primer. If your ceiling has water damage then you will want to address those problems before you begin.3. Tape Off Your Molding Using painter’s tape, mask off your molding. This will protect your ceiling color from getting on your molding. If you will be replacing the molding, take it off before your get started. If you don’t have molding then you will want to tape off the top of your walls.4. Prime Your Ceiling Priming is not a requirement, however, it can help to reduce the number of coats of paint that you will need to apply to your ceiling. After priming your ceiling allow it to dry before you start to paint.5. Paint Your Ceiling If you have a long and sturdy table then you can use this to stand on while you paint. Follow the application instructions on your paint tin as you apply the paint to your ceiling. To protect your hair you may want to use a hair cover or a hat.6. Let it Dry After you apply your first coat of paint allow it to dry. You can use fans to speed up this process. As the paint dries you will see areas that will need a second coat. If you used a primer then you won’t have as many spots to touch up.7. Touch Ups After the first coat has dried you can touch up areas that need additional paint. You may need to touch up spots several times before you create a seamless finish.
